My Story
Paratus Physical Therapy was established in the winter of 2022 in the fall out of a global pandemic and forged out of the belief that clients deserve better from the healthcare system today. The bottom line, the client deserves a better healthcare physical therapy experience. Paratus Physical Therapy strives to provide just that —a better healthcare experience you can trust.
Tired of seeing 20-30 patients a day in a crowded PT clinic, Paratus Founder & Owner Dr. Ryan Cunningham, grew frustrated with the experience that was provided to clients and wanted to provide something better to his clients in the Elkton and Newark, Delaware region.
Paratus is derived from the Latin phrase “In Omnia Parātus” meaning simply: Prepared in all Things. Ready for Anything. Today in a hectic, fast paced, complex world, a basic level of physical preparedness is key for success and survival. In addition, living with pain or injury greatly reduces our level of preparedness and decreases our quality of life and joy. By enhancing our basic level of physical preparedness and restoring our quality of movement, we decrease our risk of injury and increase our probability for healthy aging across the lifespan.
Paratus Physical Therapy believes in a preventative and proactive mindset with one primary goal: to provide a healthcare experience where the patient receives individualized attention, specialized plan of care, and a plan of action that will provide a basic level of readiness to handle the challenges of the day. Your time and input in the process is important to us and something we value above all.
Let’s face it, everybody is an everyday athlete in some capacity. Whether your are a busy professional lacking the stamina to get through the day, a parent who wants to keep up with their children on the playground, or a weekend warrior or middle aged grappler who wants to continue to stay injury free on the mat. No matter what your goals, Paratus Physical Therapy is the ideal experience for you!
We value your time and want our clients to know that we have your best interests in mind. You will no longer be rushed through a rehab process in a crowded gym with little or no guidance. You will not be given “any size fits all” exercises—Instead, however, you will have a plan of care specific to your needs. You will have direct access to your Doctor of Physical Therapy and not feel like just a number or cog in the healthcare machine rushed through the process. We want to provide that place where you can learn and restore proper movement, recover from an injury, and prepare for the next challenge ahead. Sound like something you are interested in?

Dr. Ryan Cunningham, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT
Doctor of Physical Therapy
Founder & Owner
Dr. Ryan Cunningham brings with him a “Never Quit” attitude to his practice and strives to maximize the physical potential of his clients, embrace their physical capabilities and skills, and help them to stay determined in the direction of their goals. Ryan has ditched the corporate stuffy atmosphere and enjoys a fun loving, energetic, eclectic approach to clinic life where clients can feel at ease and relaxed during their physical therapy experience.
Ryan is a 2011 graduate of Widener Physical Therapy, a board certified orthopedic clinical specialist and fellowship trained manual therapist. He brings with him over a decade of experience from various realms to include: outpatient orthopedics, inpatient care, home health, and primary care physical therapy with over 400 hours of clinical expertise in manual therapy, joint mobilizations, soft tissue treatments, blood flow restriction training and dry needling just to name a few. Prior to his Physical Therapy career, Ryan served in the United States Army as an Airborne/Ranger qualified Army Officer serving 4 years on active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2002-2006.
Ryan is no stranger to physical therapy himself and knows first hand about living with chronic pain and the true benefits of quality physical therapy. Ryan suffered a broken neck in a surfing accident in 2007 that most would not have walked away from. While surviving this traumatic injury, Ryan is never completely finished with the “rehabilitation” process. Every day is a day to get stronger, move better, and help those around him.
Ryan believes in maintaining as physically prepared as possible and when not rehabbing his own injuries, you can find him maintaining his weekend warrior status rock climbing, running, or getting knocked around the BJJ mats as a Gracie Jiu Jitsu Blue Belt with Meia Guarda Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Dover, Delaware. He is supported by his loving wife, 2 children, and new puppy “Audie.”
When not busy at Paratus Physical Therapy, Ryan is a Primary Care Physical Therapist serving military veterans of the tri-state region at the Delaware Veterans Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.
